At the start of the war the 1st Worcestershire battalion were in Egypt but they soon returned to England where they joined 24 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 14th November 1st Worcestershire moved into the trenches at Richebourg-St Vaast a few miles to the south of Estaires. Here they were immediately subjected to both sniper and shell fire and on their first two days the battalion had 8 killed and 30 wounded. Henry Osben was one of these casualties and he died from his wounds on 16th November. |
